  • About Elené

Dr E. Lourens graduated from Stellenbosch Medical School in 2014. After completion of her internship and community service years, she worked for 4-years as a medical officer at a district hospital in the Eastern Cape as the head of the out-patients department until November 2021.

She completed her postgraduate qualification in Sport and Exercise Medicine through the University of Pretoria in 2023.

Her interest in sport started at a very young age. She competed as a middle and long-distance runner at provincial and national level. Exercise and healthy living still form an integral part of her lifestyle.

She relocated to Gauteng in December 2021. She completed a fellowship in Sport and Exercise Medicine in December 2022 under the guidance of Prof. J. Patricios and is currently practicing as a qualified Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at Waterfall Sport and Orthopaedic Surgery.

She strives to keep updated with the latest developments in sport and exercise medicine and has attended the most recent Wits Sports and Health Conference in 2022. She consequently presented her Master’s thesis findings at the International Festival of Sports, Exercise and Medicine Conference in September 2022.

Dr Lourens is also interested and deeply passionate about women’s health and mental health and its place in the field of sport and exercise medicine. She acted as the team doctor of the New Zealand Women’s Cricket Team during the inaugural U/19 Women’s ICC Cricket World Cup in January 2023. She also attended to Women's Cricket Science, Medicine and Leadership Conference held in February 2023. To further her knowledge and update her about the newest developments in women’s health in sport, she attended the Biennial Female Athlete Conference in June 2023 hosted by the Wu Tsai Female Athlete Program in Boston, America.
