He has been in private practice as a Maxillo-facial and Oral Surgeon, with a special interest in pain in the craniomandibular and craniocervical regions, and in particular, primary headache pain of muscular, vascular, and neural origin, since 1973. In 1992, Dr Shevel founded The Headache Clinic, South Africa, with branches in Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town. The Headache Clinic is a multidisciplinary practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of migraine and other primary headaches.

His dual medical/dental training has enabled him approach the problem of headaches and migraines from both medical and dental perspectives. It is this amalgamation of knowlege that has made possible his development of new and effective treatments for headaches and migraines.
