A correct diagnosis requires knowledge, experience, a comprehensive history, thorough physical examination, careful elimination of all possible options, and mindful professional judgement to embark on the best management course. It simply is not possible in the usual rushed 10-15 minutes visit, or via a virtual platform. A few rands may be saved by taking shortcuts, but the costs of a misdiagnosis might be crippling to both patient and doctor.

So what makes our practice unique? Our practice is modelled on time-based consultations, roughly based on R2000 per hour. You schedule all the time you need, and you will be charged accordingly. Medical aids partly contribute to the first 15 minutes, thereafer it is for your account.

In a true emergency (heart attack, stroke, convulsions, near-drowning, loss of consciousness, major bleeding wounds, fractures, etc.), be sure to rush straight to your nearest hospital ER (if needed per ambulance 082-911), where life-saving emergency expertise, equipment, blood analysis, radiology, specialists, etc. are on 24/7/365 stand-by just for you. In a stroke, think 'TIME IS BRAIN" - 2 million neurons die with every minute wasted. Same with acute severe pressing chest pain - all suspected heart attack patients must be admitted to hospital, so go straight there.

Dr Steven is dad to two busy little boys of 5 and 8, as well as a 22-year old daughter at university, and naturally enjoys working with KIDS OF ALL AGES. Dr Steven gained valuable experience working in the neonatal (babies under 28 days old, some as small as 900g) and pediatric departments of Tygerberg Hospital, and hence is quite confortable with even the tiniest of babies. Asthma, ADHD, acne, and all other common childhood conditions are managed.

As a dually qualified doctor and pharmacist, Dr Steven especially understands the intricacies of optimally managing polypharmacy in the treatment of multilpe co-morbidities in adults, such as hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, diabetes, thyroid disorders, asthma, anxiety & depression, etc., so as to ensure the best possible long-term health outcomes for his patients.  

Dr Steven supports the wide use of the new WEIGHT MANAGEMENT INJECTIONS (such as Semaglutide/Ozempic), to lower weight and thus most cardiovascular risks. These injections are also suitable for children >12 years. Due to the worldwide shortages, our practice does keep a limited stock on site.  

Dr Steven takes a keen interest in the exciting new frontier of PSYCHEDLIC ASSISTED MANAGEMENT of various conditions, such as depression, anxiety, OCD, insomnia, inflammatory conditions, IBS, chronic pain, cancer effects (nausea, pain, anorexia), and a host of others. 

KETAMINE (registered in the USA as a nasal spray) and MEDICINAL CANNABIS (pharmaceutical grade CBD/THC formulations) are widely accepted as very effective in the treatment arsenal. Speak to us about the possibilities.

THE 13 PRACTICE COMMANDMENTS:

(1) Do not ask us to do anything unethical or illegal, such as antibiotics over the phone, any treatment when you have not been consulted, scripts for family and friends unknown to us, requesting 6-monthly repeat script without a 6-monthly repeat check-up visit, sick certificates without a consultation, etc.

(2) We are unique in offering time-based consultations, and charge according to actual time spent on your consultation. You select any appropriate amount of time you need, so you do not feel rushed, and all your concerns can be satisfactorily addressed. Our rate is prorated based on R2000 per hour.

The brief 15-minute option should only rarely be chosen if you anticipate to be in and out for a very minor matter. Most consultations require at least 30 minutes to be done properly. 

Problems like chest pain (needs an ECG and blood tests), depression & anxiety, longstanding tiredness, stress, general unwell feeling, etc. require longer visits. Please choose appropriately from the 30m, 45m, 60m, 120m options.

If your selected time runs out, the appointment time will be extended to the actual time used, and charged accordingly. If our diary does not allow it, then you will be asked to reschedule more time later to deal with unfinished matters.  

(3) Administrative tasks requested by you (prescriptions, motivations, referrals, letters, authorizations, etc) will be charged accordingly. Generally R300 per short instruction. More time-consuming instructions will be charged based on the hourly tariff. 

(4) All patients on chronic treatment must have a mandatory face-to-face consultation for those conditions at least every 6 months. We are not allowed to merely issue repeat prescriptions without following up on the patient.

(5) Strong painkillers (Stilpane / Tramacet / Opioids) and sleeping tablets (Stilnox / Zopivane / Ivedal / Dormonoct) cannot ethically be prescribed for continuous periods longer than 14-21 days.
Painkillers and sleeping tablets are for short-term, intermittent, as needed use only. Your doctor should not facilitate addictions. Our practice will only issue one prescription at a time. If your condition requires chronic treatment, please furnish us with an authorizing letter from your specialist/ psychiatrist. You may be a very good candididate for medicinal cannabis threatment to come off those addictive drugs.  

(6) Telephone consultations (via phone, video, whatsapp, e-mail) are charged at R500. Medical aids expect their members to pay for these themselves.

(7) Should you have "flu" (any of fever, snotty nose, sore throat, cough, body aches), be kind and alert us, and wear a free mask available at reception. We will do compulsory on-site rapid tests to protect our staff and keep our practice Covid free. If Dr Steven contracts Covid, the practice must be closed for a week at great financial cost.     

(8) We do not offer elective after hours services for convenience. Should you need to take time off work to see us, we will issue a sick note. As a single doctor practice, we simply cannot be "on-call standby" 24/7/365. Exhaustion leads to poor concentration, loss of empathy, and potentially catastrophic clinical errors - common gripes against doctors. You derserve the full attention of a well-rested doctor. So if your problem can safely wait till the next working day, use our 24/7 automated online diary to grab the earliest available slot. 

(9) For anytime true emergencies, do not waste precious time at inadequately staffed and equipped GP practices. Rush straight to your nearest Hospital ER to be seen by the duty specialist.

(10) Doctors need utmost focus, and sufficient time to deal with each health complaint of each patient. Please do not squeeze multiple patients into one appointment. Hearing "this one coughs, that one sneezes, the other one has sormach pain, the other one does not sleep, and the other one might as well be checked while we are here" drive all doctors bonkers, and parents to criticisms. Each patient must have his/her own appointment. And preferably only one patient in the examination room at a time to avoid chaos.  

(11) It is important that you settle all amounts owing at each visit to enable us to continue being of excellent service to you. Card facilities are available. Should you need credit, please arrange a facility beforehand with your bank. It truly is very unpleasant for us to be reduced to begging for payment for services rendered. It is not unusual for practices to be crippled by 20-40% bad debt, so please do not take exception when kindly asked to settle your account.  

(12) Your privacy is paramount and protected by law, even from as young as 12 years old. So feel free to discuss any health matter openly.  

(13) You are welcome to record any consultation as an 'aid de memoire', but as a courtesy, please inform Dr Steven beforehand. Dr Steven reserves the right to record any consultation without notice in his absolute discretion. Female patients requiring an intimate examination will be offered a chaperone be present in the consulting room, whilst still protecting privacy.
