When Dr Ilse Lategan decided to pursue her studies in medicine, it was because of her childhood dream of being a helper and healer to others. In 2011, she graduated from Wits University, following which she spent her two-year internship at Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto. It was here that she found her calling amongst the children in the paediatric ward. In 2014, she relocated to Cape Town and spent six years working in paediatrics at various hospitals. She received her Diploma in Child Health and joined the Specialist Paediatric Registrar Training Program at Red Cross Children’s Hospital in 2018. During this time, she gave birth to her beautiful son, Leo, and made the difficult decision to leave the training program to provide her with more time to enjoy motherhood. However, her passion for working with children remains, prompting her to continue her life’s work as a Paediatric General Practitioner. Motherhood has taught Ilse to see her patients through an even more maternal eye. She understands first-hand the joys and challenges of parenthood. She believes that child healthcare should be easily accessible, comprehensive and family-centred. Ilse hopes to support you on your incredible journey from birth through your little one’s childhood years.
